No matter what your tradition, the holidays are special time of year even in tropical Hawaii.  Hawaiians celebrate the holidays in their special way, from tree-lighting ceremonies to international surfing tournaments.  The spirt of the season runs strong in the Islands. You’ll see Mele Kalikimaka, which is Hawaiian for Merry Christmas, all across Hawaii and feel the warmth of the season in a very special way.  

Honolulu City Lights

Each year Honolulu City Lights is an unofficial start of the holiday season that takes place around the historic downtown. There is a giant Christmas tree, lots of lights and plenty of festive displays. The kick-off is December 5th and includes the lighting of the City tree, food and lots of fun rides and activities for the keiki or kids. If you are on Oahu during the holidays be sure to make this event part of your experience.  

Billabong Pipe Masters

What better way to ring in the holiday season than watching the annual Pipe Master tournament held at the world-famous Banzai Pipeline the North Shore of Oahu. This annual surfing event, which began in 1970, brings the world’s best surfers to compete for the title of Champion and prize money. The contest takes place during December.  The event is the final contest in the Triple Crown of Surfing.

Lights on Rice Parade – Kauai

If you are spending the holidays on Kauai, the events and activities are smaller and quainter, in keeping with the quiet and laid-back-style of the island. There is the annual Lights on Rice parade that takes place in the town of Lihue. There are floats and lots of lights and a festive atmosphere to ring in the holiday season. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. on December 4th.

Welcome Santa in an Outrigger Canoe – Waikiki & Kaanapali

If you have kids who want to see Santa, there are a couple wonderfully Hawaiian events for the entire family to enjoy. In Hawaii, Santa smartly trades in his sleigh for an outrigger canoe, a much more efficient and Hawaiian way to travel in the Islands! Young and old alike can enjoy a little holiday magic on the beach when Santa rides the rolling surf to the sands.

On Oahu, Santa lands on Waikiki Beach on December 12th at 9:00 am. On Maui, he arrives at Kaanapali Beach on December 19th at 3:30 p.m. Kids will be treated to a cookie and ornament decorating event.
