Oahu and Kauai Hawaii Events – June 2015

By John Di Rienzo
May 2015

There are many fun cultural events happening on the Hawaiian islands of Oahu and Kauai during the month of June. We are heading into summer, which is when the South Shore of Oahu and Kauai, and all Hawaiian Islands, come alive with summer-swell activity. Expect to begin seeing big white rollers off of Waikiki and Ala Moana Beach Park and to find calmer waters up on the North Shore.

If you are coming to Oahu or Kauai with Exotic Estates this June, keep these events in mind!

Every Friday - Royal Hawaiian Band Concert at Iolani Palace - Oahu

June is a month that has important dates for the state of Hawaii. During June, Hawaii’s monarchy and rich cultural heritage are honored. On June 5th, a fun way for the enter family to enjoy an afternoon outside is the Royal Hawaiian Band Concert on the grounds of Iolani Palace, the only royal palace on US soil. They play from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Combine this with a visit to historic palace, the unique Hawaii state capital building and walk through downtown. Consider lunch in bustling Chinatown, which is a historic area in its own rite. There are plenty of great places to eat, window shop and lots of galleries!

Check out the Iolani Palace website for details: http://www.iolanipalace.org/Events.aspx

Kamehameha Day - June 11, 2015

Kamehameha Day is the day that the state of Hawaii honors Kamehameha the Great, who united the Hawaiian Islands into one royal kingdom in 1810. Under his rein, the nation of Hawaii was born and his legacy can be felt to this day. Every June, there are parades and ceremonies all over the islands to honor him.

On Oahu, on June 12th, leis are draped on the statue of Kamehameha downtown across from historic Iolani Palace. It’s a beautiful and moving testament to the strength, pride and spirit of the Hawaiian people. There will also be a parade and festival taking place around Kapiolani Park, near Waikiki, on June 13th.

On Kauai, you can also partake in Kamehameha Day festivities in Lihue on June 13th. There will be a parade and lots of vendors with food, fun and culture for all.

Obon Dances – Various Locations on Oahu & Kauai

Obon is an ancient Buddhist custom that takes place during the summer months. Essentially these are beautiful outdoor festivals that incorporate dance, traditional music, and of course, food. There are festivals throughout the Hawaiian Islands and locals and visitors alike are welcome to join in the fun. These events are free and an opportunity to experience the rich cultural heritage of Japanese Americans in Hawaii.

On Oahu, there are festivals held around the island throughout June. You can look for events organized through various Buddhist temples and missions, including the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii. On Kauai, look for the same.

First Friday of the Month - Downtown Honolulu on Oahu

Remember that on the first Friday over every month, all of the galleries and businesses in downtown Honolulu sponsor a night of art and music. If you are looking for something fun and culturally current to do, come to downtown Honolulu and check out artwork by some of Hawaii’s best artists and, of course, wonderful food and vibrant energy.

Honolulu Pride Parade

The Hawaii LGBT Legacy Foundation sponsors Honolulu’s Pride parade on June 6th. The parade will run from Ala Moana Park to Kapiolani Park near Diamond Head. Check out the Foundation’s website for event details.
